Today the 9th July marked the beginning of a 3 day training workshop in Computer programming and critical thinking at Mbarara University of Science and Technology. The training is being carried out at the Institute of Computer Science in Computer Lab one and Two. Each school sent two students and One computer Science teacher with an aim of using the Teacher to mentor the students and help them formulate/strengthen computer Science clubs at their respective schools.
Participants were first given a tour around the University which made of the students admire the state of the art facilities especially the Library that was equipped with all the necessary tools for learning including a research facility.
Latter, the workshop was opened by Ms. Birungi Speciaoza who represented the Academic Registrars Department. She encouraged participants to embrace Technology as this this is the only way to develop their country in this 21st Century, she further stressed that innovations in ICT drive the economy and latter thanked the organizers for thinking creatively and contributing to society/Community development as this is one of the core components of the University
Participants were latter given a brief background about Google and CS4HS by Mr. Rober Mugonza, then followed an introducing to Computer programming and the different types of programming languages by Mr. Kimera Richard, a presentation about formulation and management of School clubs with specific emphasis of sustainability followed and was given by Mr. John Ziine.
The afternoon called for breakaway sessions that saw teachers being taught Google technologies for educators and students introduced to the latest Google technologies. Both sessions were concluded by introducing the two different groups to Scratch by Mr. Rogers Mwavu and Ms. Linda Kwoshaba.
The training will end with a competition in programming using scratch programming, here schools will form teams and develop a program that will be uploaded on the scratch website.
